Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure refers specifically to the inhalation of airborne asbestos fibers. When asbestos fibers become lodged in the lungs, scarring of the lung tissue may ultimately lead to asbestos cancer, including mesothelioma.

People may be exposed to asbestos in their workplace, their communities, or their homes. If products containing asbestos are disturbed, tiny asbestos fibers are released into the air. Additionally, asbestos exposure can occur through secondary exposure, such as washing the clothes of someone whose job requires them to work around asbestos.

Steps to Take If You Have Been Exposed

Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos, particularly those working with the fiber prior to 1970, would likely benefit from learning more about asbestos and how it causes mesothelioma. For those exposed to asbestos through a previous job, routine screenings for mesothelioma are highly recommended. This is because the earlier the illness is caught, the better the chances for survival.

In cases where mesothelioma does occur, those exposed to asbestos may be eligible for legal compensation. If you or a loved one has been exposed to asbestos, a competent asbestos cancer lawyer may be able to help you receive fair compensation for medical bills, pain, and suffering.
