Environmental Protection Agency – Libby, Montana
Libby, Montana was home to a large vermiculite mine. Purchased by W.R. Grace in the early 1960’s, the mine overtook logging as the primary source of employment. W.R. Grace closed the mine in 1990. In 1999, the EPA sent an Emergency Response Team to sample the soil and discovered asbestos contamination. This contamination is responsible for the illnesses and deaths of many people. The cleanup continues today.
