Perth Now (the web presence of the Australian Sunday Times) is reporting that researchers in Australia have had promising results in treating mesothelioma tumors in mice. The treatment protocol uses two drugs in combination to trigger an immune system response that attacks the tumor cells: imiquimod (usually sold under the trade name Aldara), a topical treatment for precancerous and cancerous skin lesions, and anti CD40, a specific antibody already approved for treatment of other maligancies. The researchers report a two-fold increase in survival times and notable results even in advanced tumors. It is not clear when research actual human patients would start.
