Consulting Your Doctor about Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is an incurable asbestos cancer that affects approximately 2,000 to 3,000 people annually. The primary cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. Therefore, if you have been exposed to asbestos, it is important that you notify your doctor so that appropriate tests for mesothelioma can be done.

Should you receive a diagnosis of mesothelioma, your doctor will recommend treatment options. Most likely you will not have one mesothelioma doctor, but a team of medical professionals providing various treatments for your mesothelioma. It is important that you have candid conversations with all members of your medical treatment team, and ask all your questions no matter how insignificant they may seem.

It is a good idea to brainstorm about the questions in advance of the doctor’s appointment, and write them down so you do not forget one. Some questions you may want to ask include:

  • What type of mesothelioma do I have?
  • Has the mesothelioma spread into other areas of my body?
  • What stage is my cancer and how does that affect my prognosis?
  • Is my mesothelioma resectable?
  • Are you experienced in treating my mesothelioma type?
  • What are the treatment options for my mesothelioma?
  • What is the goal for my mesothelioma treatment?
  • What are your recommendations for treatment, and why?
  • What are the risks and side effects of your recommended treatment options?
  • What preparations do I need to make to be ready for treatment?
  • How long will each treatment last?
  • What will take place during treatment?
  • Where will the treatment be done?
  • Who will perform the treatment?

It is also a good idea to ask for assistance from a family member or friend who can attend all your doctor visits with you to document the information, your questions and the doctor’s answers. You will want to keep your mesothelioma information in one place for easy access and retrieval.
