Dr. Paul H. Sugarbaker is the Medical Director at the Center for Gastrointestinal Malignancies, Gastrointestinal Oncology Center, Washington Hospital Center, Washington, D.C. As a mesothelioma doctor, he is considered one of the foremost authorities on treatments and therapies for peritoneal mesothelioma.
Dr. Sugarbaker earned his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, completed his general surgery residency at Peter Bent-Brigham Hospital in Boston and completed his surgical fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Previous to his appointment at Washington Hospital Center, Dr. Sugarbaker served as Director of Surgical Oncology, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA.
Research and Topics of Interest:
Dr. Sugarbaker’s primary focus is on the treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies, in particular colorectal with peritoneal carcinomatosis and peritoneal mesothelioma (a less common form of mesothelioma than pleural mesothelioma).
He pioneered cyto-reductive surgery and it is emerging as a promising peritoneal mesothelioma treatment. This therapy involves the application of a chemotherapy drug/s directly to the cancer tissues.

As a pleural mesothelioma physician, Dr. Sugarbaker speaks extensively on a variety of treatments and modalities related to the disease and publishes in a wide selection of peer reviewed and research publications.
Additionally, he belongs to numerous professional organizations including American College of Surgeons, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Association of Immunologists, American Association for Cancer Research, Society for Biological Therapy, and International Association for Enterostomal Therapy, among others.
